Bruderhof - (pl. Bruderhöfe): Literally means "place of Brothers". Is used to describe the colonies on which Hutterites live. buah - (pl. buem): Hutterite male, over the age of 15, but yet unmarried. Dariusleut - Group or sub-group of Hutterites who gained their name from Darius Walter. Darius was the name of their minister and organizer. In Canada, the Dariusleut live in the provinces of Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia; in the US, they live in Montana, Washinton, and Oregon. Generally less conservative than the Lehrerleut. diehn - (pl. diene): Hutterite female, over the age of 15, but yet unmarried.Essenschuel - (pl. Essenschueln): Literally "eating school". This is a dining room within the community kitchen of all Hutterite colonies where children between the ages of 5 and 15 have their meals. Gebet - (pl. Gebetn): Gebet is the German word for prayer. This daily evening service is started with a song, followed by the sermon and a short prayer. The whole service usually lasts about 30 minutes. Hausholtor - the secretary treasurer or colony boss. He oversees all enterprises on the colony and is in charge of all financial affairs. Lehr - (pl. Lehrn): The word Lehr means "a teaching". A Lehr is a teaching or sermon of Biblical doctrine. Lehr occurs once per week, on Sunday mornings. Sermons begin with a song and are followed with the Vorred (First Teaching). The Vorred is followed by a short prayer, which is followed by the main teaching or Lehr. After a final song, members are dismissed. Lehrerleut - Group or sub-group of Hutterites who gained their name from Jakob Wipf who was a teacher (Lehrer). In Canada, the Lehrerleut live in the provinces of Saskatchewan and Alberta; in the US, they live in Montana and Washington. Thie group is the most conservative of the three. leut - means people, as in Dariusleut. This would mean "the Darius people". lining song - Many Hutterite ministers still line their songs. Lining occurs when the leader "lines" or recites each line in a song which is followed by the congregation singing it. Predigor - the minister of the colony. He's responsible for the spiritural and ultimately financial well-being of the colony. Schlochtorhaus - (pl. Schlochtorheisor): "Slaughter house". Butchering shop. Most colonies slaughter their own animals for personal consumption in their Schlochtorhaus. Schmied-leut - Group or sub-group of Hutterites who gained their name from Schmied--Michel. Schmied means "blacksmith". In Canada, the Schmiedeleut live exclusively in the province of Manitoba; in the US, they live in South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota. Generally less conservative than the Darius or Lehrerleut. Tiechle - Dark head covering or scarf worn by girls and women aged 14 and older. The Tiechle is black in color and covered in white white dots. This familiar polka-dot pattern, however, appears more often among the Lehrer and Darius-leut. Weinzedle - he is the work distributor who is almost exclusively in charge of the farm field work operation. Often he's responsible for providing jobs for the unmarried young men who don't have a permanent position in the colony. |
