Hutterite Choirs
Hutterites value song. Hutterites of old have been
composing Christian songs for centuries. Much of their suffering
and daily struggles are chronicled in their numerous songs, composed in
German, and found in our Väterlieder songbooks.
These songs are more often sung in Church gatherings and rarely are they
harmonized.
Within the last 20 to 30
years, there has been a greater emphasis within Hutterite colonies to
sing in choirs with full part harmony. The Western Manitoba
Hutterian Youth Choir (WMHYC) came about as a result of revived interest
by young Hutterite men and women in praising God in song.
Western Manitoba
Hutterian Youth Choir (WMHYC)
The WMHYC was formed in 1999 after many Hutterite young people showed
vigorous interest in choir singing, note reading, and choir directing.
The choirs of seven different colonies came together for formal
practices. Decker, Odanah, Oak River, New Dale, Trileaf, Fairway
and Millshof colony choirs were all part of the first western Hutterian
choir.
The first formal recording
was made at Decker Colony (in a truck wash, believe it or not!) in 2000.
Today the choir has grown by one colony, Acadia. In 2004, another
CD was produced, recorded in two different locations, at New Dale Colony
and at Decker Colony. New Dale Colony, located near Elkton SD, was
a guest choir for several songs on this CD.

Decker Hutterian Youth Choir
Decker Hutterian Youth Choir, who are members of the
Western Hutterian Choir, have been singing in an organized choir since
1981. They have been under the tutelage of George (Butch) Wipf
from their inception. Along the way, many cassettes and CDs have
been recorded, including several non-professional cassettes in the late
70s. Semi-professional recordings were made in '83, '88, '89, '90,
'93, and in '94. Professional recordings were made in 1995 and
1998. The Decker Colony Choir and George Wipf, their director,
have been instrumental in encouraging and inspiring other colony choirs
to form and to sing as a group.
