Traditional Marriage

Written by: The Bridge on Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

On Saturday, Glory’s brother, who lives outside Palmgrove had a traditional marriage. Most of the people in Palmgrove were invited. I decided to go along and see how they celebrate a wedding in Nigeria. Getting there was quite the experience in itself; it wasn’t too far from Palmgrove but the roads into the jungle were just terrible. Instead of one tire going into the pothole, the whole vehicle goes into the pothole then out the other side. It had rained that night, so every hole in the road was full of water. Once we arrived, there werenâ€....

Yikes! ‘Shocking’ Situations!

Working with electrical equipment around here is, well shocking, in more ways then one. The voltage is 220V, unlike our 110V at home. The problem is, the ground wire is usually left out in the wiring, or if it’s there, then it’s often not connected anyway. Just the other day, Joseph came to the management meeting all upset. Apparently what had happened was, someone from outside had come in and was telling him that the people of Palmgrove were just slaves to Inno Vetter (the minister) and the white men. The man said, that he had worked hard in the government council, and now had a nice house to live in and a good income, while the people of Palmgrove can't even make their living. After discussing it in the morning management meeting, we found that this was a general attitude of the people around P....

Cultural Traditions

While Eddy Vetter was here, we tried organizing some things differently, so that they run more smoothly. However, you can about imagine what it`s like trying to change people’s long established habits of doing things. For example, in the dining room, the children were making too much of a mess on the floor and table, a solution just had to be found. It was decided that each family would eat together at one table. They objected so stron....
